Carol, this resonated with me quite a bit as I have been in a relationship with someone who is not diagnosed but textbook NPD. In my experience, the narcissists that I have called out and moved away from become incredibly angry with me before moving onto the next “mirror.” You’re absolutely right, they both need you and hate you at the same time.
